Alexander Mielke (WIAS Berlin) Evolution driven by energy and entropy

We discuss the dynamical systems (including ordinary and partial differential equations) that include Hamitlonian effects driven by a conserved energy and dissipative effects driven by an increasing entropy. We introduce GENERIC, which is an abstract framework combining these two extreme situation in a thermodynamically consistent way. The acronym is an abbreviation for General Equations for Non-Equilibrium Reversible Irreversible Coupling.
We show that this structure can help to sort different physical effect and introduce corresponding mathematical structures. Moreover, we address the possibilities of coarse graining based on GENERIC following the book of H-C Öttinger 2005.
